If you thought Barbie was the best whimsical satire about feminism and the harms of the patriarchy, featuring music from Charli XCX, with a massive choreographed fight scene, made in 2023… well, think again!

Bottoms is a short 91 minute movie that is jam packed with comedy. I’ve heard people call it ‘Fight Club for lesbians’ so duh I had to tune in.

I had seen Bottoms before, but two summers ago, at its release- so when my roommate and her friend sat down to watch it last weekend, I decided to join them. I knew it would be enjoyable, but this time I was glued

First of all, this movie has a stacked cast. Rachel Sennott, Ayo Edebiri, Nicholas Galitzine, and even football king Marshawn Lynch. This movie was directed by Emma Seligman, who also has Shiva Baby (2020) under her directing belt, which also stars Rachel Sennott.

The movie follows Josie (Ayo Edebiri) and PJ (Rachel Sennott), two best friends trying to meet girls in order to lose their virginity. So they start a high school ‘self defense’ club in order to meet them, and as it grows, things start to go out of control and over their head.

This movie is hilarious. Jeff (Nicholas Galitzine) is probably one of my favorite characters, despite his awful disposition. Hazel (Ruby Cruz) also is in my top three characters. To fill out this top three, I’d pick Mr. G (Marshawn Lynch).

Each of these characters’ line delivery is out of this world. The whole movie is actually out of this world, in its satire concepts and slapstick comedy that have you thinking ‘no way a high school would literally let this slide’. But that’s the point! Which makes it super awesome.

There are so many lines that remind me of Superbad, in the way that the events occurring are so out of this world, and that they’re high school seniors. Both movies did a perfect job at encapsulating the time they were made in the world it was made in.

If you have the chance, I say absolutely watch this film. Serving it up at a ★★★★½/★★★★★.

(You can watch this movie on Apple TV or Amazon Prime).
